Joe Hendrix brings two decades of charter and traditional public school experience to the CCAP board, including strong familiarity with small and rural school districts. He joined the board to support authorizers and charters in their efforts to meet the needs of diverse learners and improve outcomes through high-quality authorizing and oversight practices.
Since 2019, he has served as Deputy Superintendent of the Sutter County Office of Education where his responsibilities include charter school authorizing and oversight, guidance and support for both charter authorizing agencies and charter schools, and special education services. He also led the agency in establishing Pathways Charter Academy, a nonclassroom-based county community charter school, to expand opportunities and improve outcomes for students.
Before joining the Sutter County Office of Education, Mr. Hendrix served as Superintendent/Principal of Nuestro Elementary School District where he was responsible for all school and district operations, including charter authorizing and oversight. While at Nuestro, Joe was able to lead the district in modernizing facilities, increasing enrollment, and improving students’ academic achievement.
Prior to serving the Nuestro Elementary School District, he worked in the Plumas Lake Elementary School District where he served as a traditional classroom teacher, charter school teacher, and charter school administrator before moving into district-level administration. As a district administrator, his responsibilities included charter oversight, curriculum and instruction, special education, personnel services, student services, and assessment and accountability.
In the early 2000s, Mr. Hendrix transitioned from teaching at Solano Christian Academy, a small private school in Fairfield, California, to serving as a dropout prevention specialist in the Marysville Joint Unified School District. To better serve students, he earned a Dropout Prevention Specialist Certificate from California State University, Fresno. During that time, he established community partnerships to support students, facilitated the coordination of services for at-risk students, provided professional development for school staff and parents, and served on IEP (Individualized Education Program) teams for at-risk students.
Mr. Hendrix earned a Master’s in Education from California State University, Chico and a BA in Psychology from the University of West Florida. His wife Starr has served as a public school teacher and administrator, and currently teaches in a charter school where two of their children attend.
