Dr. Ginger Hovenic is a proactive educator who held various K-12 administrative positions. She is a strong advocate for quality charter schools and believes that authorizers and charter schools can work together to provide models for an outstanding education for all students. Hovenic has created several charter schools and provided training in fiscal management and academic success while Executive Director of the San Diego Business Roundtable for Education.

She has also served as Head of International University High School in London, an Educational Consultant for the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Overseas Schools, Advisor to the Department of Education on the state and national levels, and as a George Lucas Educational Fellow. She served on the Educate the Children Foundation Board, California State Superintendent’s Charter Schools Board, National Charter Schools Board, the Governor’s School to Career Advisory Board, and the State Accountability Commission.

The George Lucas Education Foundation and The Learning Channel produced documentaries of her successful implementation of technology in the classroom and Education Week, NEA Today, CTA Educator, Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and twenty-six other publications have also highlighted her leadership. She has written several books on education making a difference and wrote a very successful bi-monthly column entitled, “Education Upfront”, for three years for the Daily Transcript newspaper.

In 1994, Dr. Hovenic was named California School Administrator of the Year by the Association of California School Administrators and National Distinguished Principal by the National Association of Elementary School Principals, VALIC, and the U. S. Department of Education. The Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge awarded her the 1995 Teacher’s Medal, the highest educator award presented by this organization. In 1996, she received the prestigious Hart Vision Award presented by the California Network of Educational Charters for excellence in education. She also served as a member of the prestigious national OERI Study Group for Achieving World Class Standards: The Challenge for Educating Teachers. She has been named Citizen Ambassador to South Africa and has consulted with Ministries of Education in Japan, Singapore, and Malaysia.

As Executive Director and Founder of San Diego County’s Classroom of the Future Foundation, she was honored with the SONY Creator Award for outstanding achievement using technology to make a difference in student learning. She has served as President/CEO of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce Foundation and Executive Director of the 90-member Business Roundtable for Education.

Dr. Hovenic has taught at International University, Europe, Harvard University, and San Diego State University sharing ideas of how schools can be different learning places for today’s students. Most recently she served as Vice President of Corporations, Business and Government for Alliant International University and Director Accrediting Commission for Schools Western Association for Schools and Colleges (WASC).
