Marlo Hartsuyker brings an eclectic array of experiences, from law to sales to charter school founding, to her role as Director of Charter School Support and Oversight in the Ventura County Office of Education (VCOE). Hartsuyker directly oversees five VCOE-sponsored charter schools and provides support to another seven charters and their sponsoring districts in Ventura County.
As an authorizer, Hartsuyker believes that VCOE plays an essential role in improving and maintaining charter school quality through steady oversight and monitoring of fiscal operations, assessing educational program performance, overseeing school operations and school board governance, and providing resources and information to Ventura County families regarding educational options for their children.
In 2007, a decade before she joined VCOE, Hartsuyker organized a team of community members and teachers in Thousand Oaks, California, in converting a traditional public school in Conejo Valley Unified School District into Meadows Arts and Technology Elementary School (MATES) Charter. She then served as the school’s founding board president.
She credits her background as a practicing attorney since 1995 for providing valuable insight and familiarity with charter school laws and regulations that aided her in establishing governance practices, monitoring school finances to ensure long-term stability, analyzing state academic test results to identify areas for improvement, and setting goals for MATES.
Hartsuyker is also sharing her diverse skills, knowledge, and passion with CCAP since becoming a board member in February of 2024.
