The Annual Report Toolkit 2.0
Annual reports on charter school performance provide the foundation for charter renewal decisions based on the criteria in state law. This toolkit is aligned to provide modifiable templates aligned to those renewal criteria.
Annual reports do not replace an authorizer’s formal process for considering a charter school renewal application. However, they are an essential practice for effective oversight of charter schools. A comprehensive annual report serves three critical functions:
- Allowing for alignment of the criteria for renewal and the renewal review process.
- Indicating the likelihood of the school’s ability to make a compelling case for renewal; and
- Providing charter schools with regular feedback regarding their strengths, opportunities for improvement, and progress toward renewal—and, in the process, affording them the opportunity to take early corrective action to increase the opportunities for their charter school to succeed.
The Annual Report Toolkit contains an introduction, an oversight framework, four sections focused on the four essential authorizing questions, three model annual performance report options with annotated samples, and an appendix for the Annual Report for authorizer staff, PowerPoint presentations introducing many of these components also are provided.
Version 2.0 of the Annual Report Toolkit was released in September 2024. For authorizers who previously have utilized the original version of the Annual Report, developed with the assistance of WestEd, it still is available for reference.
